If any handgun in our Best Handguns of 2022 review exceeded expectations the most, it was the Taurus G3X. We searched the entire field of new full-size, compact, and microcompact pistols, and when the dust settled, the G3X was the standout pistol for the entire test team.
Taurus G3c Review: Optics Ready Toro For Self Defense
This compact 9mm pistol is a simple and affordable pistol, designed to compete with the Glock G19 (which was heavily influenced by it). It is a polymer frame pistol that is fired by a blow and has two 15 round magazines. The Taurus G3X has some similarities to the G19 — which pretty much sets the standard in this category — but it also has a few key differences that set it apart. In addition, the G3X comes at a high price.
The compact pistol field is filled with similar-looking pistols that have similar features and can do pretty much the same thing. The market is insignificant and it is very difficult for individual weapons to differentiate themselves. A small favorable combination of features and price often makes the difference. The Taurus G3X performs well in both areas.
Speaking of size, the G3X has a shorter barrel than many pistols in the compact category. The 3.2-inch barrel is nearly an inch shorter than the Glock G19's 4.02-inch barrel, and most compact pistols have 3.8- to 4-inch barrels. While the barrel length is closer to what you'll find in the micro-compact category, the grip length and frame are sized to hold a 15-round magazine – the same capacity as the G19. A slightly shorter barrel will certainly make a difference in wearing comfort and mobility, especially in the appendix holding position.
Another notable feature of the Taurus G3x is that it has "retrigger capability", meaning if you get a light primary attack and the gun misfires, you can pull the trigger again and it will hit. primary again. While this is not a feature that is likely to be used in general, light primary attacks do occasionally occur. I had a baiter that didn't fire on the first shot with a lot of ammo because the ammo wasn't fully seated in the case.
Review: Taurus G3 T.o.r.o.
The G3X trigger feels good and our sample broke through 5 pounds, 8 ounces—half a pound under the published 6-pound specs. Shock-fired pistols tend to travel quite a bit before the trigger breaks, but this one isn't too shabby. It has a trigger safety bar that must be depressed to fire the gun, and the trigger breaks cleanly and has excellent tactile adjustment.

The Taurus G3X comes with two 15-round steel magazines, and several members of our test team noted that the magazine quality was better than they expected for the gun's price. A good magazine can be maligned and overlooked, but a bad magazine can ruin the function and reputation of a great gun. For example, another gun in our test had a grip that did a lot of damage — and that's hard to ignore even in the best guns.
Overall, the Taurus G3X is just a clean, good looking gun. Even with its short barrel, it features a single-slot accessory rail on the front of the frame, a low-profile sight, and a tastefully angled slide profile for easy carry and retraction. The grips are nicely textured with fine dots to ensure a secure grip, and the frame has attention to detail, such as a ridge to prevent accidental activation of the slide stop and a small indentation for the thumb of your frame-supporting hand to index.
Taurus G2s Review: Conceal Carry On A Budget
If I'm being picky, the only aesthetic feature I don't like about this gun is the way the serial number is engraved into the barrel and slide — it almost looks hand-drilled. It doesn't look out of place on this gun.
Among a total of nearly 20 pistols, the Taurus G3X really stood out as soon as we started shooting it. We find them accurate, reliable and easy to shoot – even compared to some much more expensive pistols.
We fired about 350 rounds of various ammo through the G3X Taurus and it all performed reliably. We used 115 grain Federal Premium and U.S. cartridges, XTP Hornady Black 124-grain defensive loads, FMJ Winchester 147-grain and even Nosler ASP 147-grain defensive loads — all without a hiccup. We drove the G3X hard and only occasionally gave it a little CLP on the slides and barrel rails for lubrication.
The grip texture and frame contours make the gun easy to shoot and hang. From a performance standpoint, the Taurus G3X punches above its weight class. Recoil is smooth for a compact 9mm, and the gun is easy to control when shooting quickly and switching between targets. After two days of warming up the rifle, we were very pleased with it. It works perfectly and everything is still tight at the end of the process.

The Taurus G3X simply does what a compact, polymer-framed 9mm pistol should do. It shoots, and shoots reliably for a great value. We weren't sure if we'd notice a lack of performance due to the price, and we're happy to say we didn't.
We have no complaints about the performance, but a neater serial number engraving on the slide and barrel would give the gun a cleaner look, and the cutout on the optic would be a piece of cake.
Sometimes cheap means cheap, and a lower price means you're making a significant sacrifice in quality. This is not the impression we got from the Taurus G3X. The sample we received holds its own next to more expensive guns. In some ways it shoots a little better than its competitors. You often get what you pay for, but with the Taurus G3X you get a little more.

The G3 is a four-inch pistol with a full-size frame that is hand-loaded. The pistol is equipped with two steel magazines, a 15-round version and a 17-round magazine with an extended magazine.
This makes a good supply of ammo for home defense. The 9mm is controllable and, with this kind of capacity (ammo reserve), the trained marksman is a formidable opponent against home invaders or takeover gangs.
Taurus Spectrum Review: Not Ready For Prime Time
The Taurus G3 is similar in size to the GLOCK 19. That's a good place to go, at a size that many of us find ideal for concealed carry and home defense.
The pistol is equipped with a 15-round magazine in the plane and a 17-round magazine with an extended magazine.
The gun is an ideal size at 7.3” long. The Taurus G3 in 9mm weighs just 25 ounces. It's not a strain on the belt during a long day or on the go and is quick to deal with.
The gun has a modern light rail for mounting combat lights such as the TRUGLO/laser combo light. This flashlight offers both illumination and aiming index.
Gun Review: Taurus G3x 9mm Pistol
The light can be set for white light only, red laser only, or a combination of both. The TRUGLO Tru-Lite setup is excellent for combat shooting and is offered at a reasonable price.
When carrying the gun, I noticed that the two round base magazine only adds a mere 1/10th of an inch to the height of the gun.
The gun is broken in the now standard GLOCK type, using a spring loaded lever on the frame to release the slide.
A significant difference between the Taurus G3 and the GLOCK—and almost all other polymer-framed pistols—is that the G3 is a single-action pistol.
