Kel-tec Pf9 Problems - Kel-Tech makes guns that set trends in the firearms community. The Kel-Tec P-3AT is an ultra-compact, semi-automatic pistol chambered in .380 ACP. It set the standard for Ruger, Taurus and many other guns. In 2006, Kel-Tec upgraded the P3AT and created the KelTec PF9, the smallest and lightest 9mm pistol on the market today. So, we decided to see what has changed at Kel-Tec and offer a new suggestion as part of the Kel-Tec PF9 review.
The PF-9 is a compact single-stack 9mm in every sense of the word. It is very suitable for concealment, and can also be used as a pocket pistol. The PF-9 is the only double-action (DAO) pistol that has a hammer, not a trigger. The DAO feature means that every time you pull the trigger to fire the pistol, you must pull the hammer fully back. This, in turn, means that the trigger has a longer travel length than most guns in our test. While the trigger on our test gun needed to travel quite a ways to fire the gun, it didn't require much effort to move, coming in at just over 6 pounds.
Kel-tec Pf9 Problems
The PF-9's small size and light weight are definitely two of its biggest strengths. At just 12.6 ounces loaded, it's the lightest pistol in our test. It's also the thinnest pistol we've tested. The magazine capacity is seven rounds, and only one magazine is included with the gun. The back is not adjustable to accommodate different hand sizes. As a result, it felt a little thin in my hands.

The front of the PF-9 has a small section of Picatinny rail, a nice feature in a gun of this size. If you choose to put a light or laser on this gun, this part of the rail will come in handy. The sights on the PF-9 are three-dot, and the rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation, another feature rarely found on such a small gun. To disassemble the PF-9 you need to use the spent casing to remove the slide stop pin. Other than that, however, the operation of the PF-9 is similar to that of other common 9mm pistols.
Kel-Tec may be known for their innovation, but they are not known for their ergonomics. The PF-9's small size and light weight may be great for concealment, but it makes shooting the pistol quite painful at any length. I shot 300 rounds through the gun to test its reliability (more on that later), and I had to stop every 50 rounds to reduce the pain in my shooting hand. The slim profile and small size of the PF-9 means that this pistol does not have a lot of storage space and its low weight results in very little recoil.
However, getting a good hit on target with the PF-9 was not a problem. Neither was he firing the gun himself. I had no problem with the long trigger travel, and other controls like the magazine release were right where you'd expect them.
The PF-9 placed right among other guns in our accuracy testing, so the gun's short sight radius didn't affect its ability to fire at targets. However, because I needed extra time to adjust the recoil of each shot, follow-up shots with the PF-9 were slightly slower than with other pistols in our tests.

Kel-Tech definitely thinks outside the box, and is a trend where the market is going to move forward.
Except for the PF-9, all the guns we tested had no problems with every test round. It had serious problems loading both the 135-grain Horned HP round and the 147-grain Federal round. The PF-9 experienced a total of five FTF (failure to feed) problems with these rounds, three with the Horned and two with the Federal. Based on these findings, I would exercise great caution in testing any defensive bore ammunition before relying on it in your gun as a defensive or concealed carry pistol.
In many ways, the Kel-Tec PF-9 is where the entire single-stack 9mm revolution began. Very small, easy to conceal and easy to carry, this 9mm packs a lot of punch in a pistol that is smaller than some .380 ACP pistols. Although this small size has its disadvantages. I have owned a variety of Kel-Tec pistols in the past, and I appreciate the great ideas that come out of that company. However, for my taste, the PF-9 is not a gun I would carry regularly. It's certainly easy to carry and a breeze to conceal, but the confidence issues we saw in our hands after only 50 rounds with blank points and sour points made me think of another pistol in our testing, Which might be more to my liking.

The pistol has a polymer frame and double action only trigger. The trigger is tight but smooth, breaking at 6.5 pounds. It is not a striker-fired handgun, but the PF9 uses a hammer.
Unloaded weight is a light 12.5 ounces. The pistol is 5.25 inches long and 9 inches wide. The PF9 is smaller, but its seven-round magazine has the advantage over the six-round magazines of some smaller 9mm weapons.
When you compare the pistol to the 8.5-ounce P3AT .380 from the same manufacturer, which also has an overall length of 5.2 inches, the PF9 offers quite a bit of extra girth. The big difference is in power.
The 9mm Luger has benefited greatly from ammunition and projectile developments, and the PF9 looks better today than it did when it was first introduced. The pistol is traditional for a polymer frame gun. The grip treatment provides good friction and adhesion.
Kel Tec Pf 9: Affordable Concealment
The slots are plenty, and the slide is thin and easily punctured. The double-action trigger is quite smooth with a quick reset. The ejection port is large enough for administrative operations.
Activating a DAO trigger is very different from addressing a single-action trigger. After the reset the coordinates are needed to move backwards and forwards. The pistol is fired, and the trigger is timed to reset.
The DAO Kel-Tec is comfortable enough to hit well in the medium range. Sights are plentiful, and the pistol is a true pocket gun. There is no manual protection; The DAO trigger is a security feature. The closed breech process is traditional. Extraction is not difficult.
The PF9 is defined by a variety of large-scale ammunition. These include Federal American Eagle 124-grain FMJ, Federal Syntec 115-grain as training loads, and Hornady 124-grain XTP+P. The exciting Hornady 100-Grain Lite is certified for reliability.

For a heavier bullet choice, the 147-grain Sig Sauer Elite V Crown is tested. All were loaded, chambered, fired, and discharged without issue. Make sure the hand does not ride the slide with this pistol. Easy to do with a short slide 9mm and a common cause of malfunction for pistols of this size.
As I fired faster at the 7-yard range, the PF9 gave a good account of itself. The groups were large enough for self-defense, with no one fleeing the kill zone. Just like that, this weapon is more difficult to control than a heavy pistol, which might be expected. Controls can be difficult for inexperienced shooters. Controlling the +P load in the PF9 was no more difficult with a firm grip on the handgun.
The process of releasing the magazine is positive. Speedload exercise was not difficult to accomplish.
