Kel-tec Pf9 Frame - When looking for a good example of America's most popular carry gun, the Slimline 9, the Kel-Tec PF9 is a good place to start. It is one of the cheapest handguns and has proven itself. The Kel-Tec PF9 was one of the first ultra-light 9mm handguns.
The pistol has a polymer frame and a double action trigger. The trigger is firm but smooth, breaking at 6.5 pounds. This is not a pin pistol, but the PF9 uses a hammer.

The empty weight is a light 12.5 ounces. The gun is 5.25 inches long and 0.9 inches wide. The PF9 is small, but has an advantage in its seven-round magazine over the six-round magazine of some small 9mm handguns.

Comparing the pistol to the same manufacturer's 8.5-ounce P3AT .380, which also has an overall length of 5.2 inches, the PF9 offers significant advantages with very little additional scope. The big difference is in performance.
The 9mm Luger has benefited greatly from ammunition and projectile developments, and the PF9 may look better today than when it was first introduced. The pistol is conventional for a polymer frame pistol. The grip treatment ensures good abrasion and adhesion.
The sights are reasonable and the slide is slim and easy to holster. The double-action trigger is smooth enough with a quick reset. The ejection port is large enough for administrative handling.
Firing the DAO trigger is very different from addressing a single action trigger. Moving backwards and forwards after making a backup requires coordination. The gun is fired and the trigger is given time to reset.
Sugru Pistol Grip
The DAO Kel-Tec is smooth enough for good mid-range hits. The sights are adequate and the pistol is a real pocket pistol. There is no manual backup; The DAO trigger is the safety feature. The locked shutter action is conventional. Reduction is not difficult.
The pictured PF9 has been extensively fired with a variety of ammunition. These included the Federal American Eagle 124-grain FMJ, the Federal Synetch 115-grain as training loads, and the Hornady 124-grain XTP+P. The interesting Hornady 100-Grain Lite was tested for reliability.
The heavy bullet test was the 147-grain Sig Sauer Elite V Crown. All loads were fed, chambered, fired and ejected without issue. Make sure your hands don't ride the slide with this gun. With the 9mm short slide this is easy and a common cause of malfunctions in pistols of this size.
The PF9 shoots quickly at 7 yard range, and made a good impression. The groups were sufficient for personal defense and no one left the dead zone. However, this handgun is more difficult to control than heavier pistols, which is to be expected. Inexperienced shooters may find it difficult to control. The +P loads were not noticeably harder to control in the PF9 with a heavy grip on the pistol.
Neglected Kel Tec Pf9 Reliability And Ammo Test (informal)
The magazine release is positively in effect. Speed loads were not difficult to achieve with practice. After combat shooting practice, it is good to make a few long-distance shots, confirm the zero, and check for absolute accuracy.
The DAO trigger is long but smooth and requires attention to detail. The Kel-Tec PF9 produced reasonable results, with the single best group running 3" for five shots from a solid bench rest shooting position, at about 4" at 15 yards.
The gun has never worked and gave a believable image. It is a true 9mm pocket pistol well suited for personal defense, concealed carry and home defense. If you can carry a bigger and more convenient pistol, you should. But the PF9 is a solid choice for concealed carry.
